JustPressPlay: "It's About You" Pays An Aurally Wonderful Tribute to John Mellencamp

By Randall Under - JustPressPlay

Music is one of Earth’s oldest and most respected forms of art. For centuries, people have been entertained by soothing sounds which often contain meaning for audiences to enjoy. John Mellencamp is one such artist who has delighted many with his old school heartland rock. Amateur filmmakers Kurt Markus and his son Ian followed Mellencamp on one of his concert tours in 2009. The documentary they shot, John Mellencamp: It’s About You is a beautiful account of a musician’s journey, from artistic creation to connecting with audiences and fellow artists.

It’s About You follows Mellencamp and his band as they go on a national tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. There is a unique quality and style in the images as the filmmaking team of Markus & Markus bring Mellencamp’s musical process to many a home theater audience. The Blu-ray release of It’s About You is top notch, both visually and aurally.

Filmed magnificently on Super8, It’s About You is more than just a documentary. It’s an experience. You will feel as though you are right there on tour with Mellencamp and his band. The grainy Instagram feel of the pictures is genius and the narration by Kurt Markus only adds to the film’s stunning visuals. There is a lot of concert footage and that is fine because the songs coupled with the gritty backstage pictures only serve to enhance a truly wonderful documentary.
