John Part Of The Bob Dylan - The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration Deluxe Edition Release

John is part of the Bob Dylan - The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration - Deluxe Edition that will be released March 4 on CD, DVD & Blu-Ray. The event took place on October 16, 1992 at New York’s Madison Square Garden; the first performance of that evening, almost 22 years ago, was John’s blazing rendition of “Like A Rolling Stone.” The release also includes some bonus features including John’s performance ”Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat." He was followed by numerous other artists performing Bob Dylan songs including, among others, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, June Carter and Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty as well as Dylan himself. John set the tone for that evening commemorating Dylan’s (then) career span of 30 years.

In his liner notes to the 2 disc set that will be released through Sony’s Legacy imprint, Bill Flanagan wrote “From the opening act – John Mellencamp tearing through “Like A Rolling Stone” with the ‘Follow that’ confidence of Jerry Lee Lewis setting his piano on fire – it was clear that every performer was going to swing for the fences. Eveyone was bringing his or her A game..”

The release also includes some bonus features including John’s performance ”Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat.“ Flanagan notes, ”John Mellencamp, who’s been covering ”Like A Rolling Stone“ in concert for years, bravely took on the Dylan classic early in the show and delivered a fairly faithful and altogether convincing cover featuring strong vocal help from Pat Peterson and Sue Medley. Joining Mellencamp and his excellent band for the event on organ was Al Kooper, reprising his prominent part from Dylan’s 1965 original, which was voted the best single of the last 25 years by Rolling Stone in 1988. Mellencamp – who’s been instrumental in the activities of Farm Aid, which Dylan helped inspire with his onstage comments at Live Aid, and who directed Dylan’s ”Political World“ video in 1989 – was also in fine form for the rousing, blusey ”Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat“ from 1966’s Blonde on Blonde.“

John’s performance of ”Like A Rolling Stone“ is part of the PBS Great Performances broadcast of the concert, airing in March (check local listings).
