Fans up early for free John Mellencamp show

FROM SUN-TIMES STAFF REPORTS
Classic rocker John Mellencamp previewed his current tour with a free show this morning in Chicago's Daley Plaza.

The short, early performance — at 6 a.m. — played to a small crowd of excited fans and was aired nationally on "The Early Show" on CBS. Sun-Times columnist and WBBM-Channel 2 reporter Bill Zwecker emceed the event.

Rain held off just long enough for the performance, which included a few songs from his new album, "“Life, Death, Love and Freedom," plus classics such as "Small Town."

During commercial breaks, Mellencamp jumped off stage and signed autographs in the crowd. Fans came bearing posters, CDs, even vintage T-shirts bearing his former stage moniker, John Cougar.

The performance was a sneak peek at the rocker's current concert tour, which is sold out Tuesday night at the Charter One Pavilion on Northerly Island.
