07/31/2015 - In honor of Mellencamp’s August 4th date at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the final show of a tour that has made a number of Indiana stops already, Jeff Vrabel, a freelance music writer for such outlets as GQ, Men's Health, Billboard and more compiled a scattered, highly unscientific, and 100 percent debatable list of Mellencamp’s best Hoosier concerts over the past four decades for the current issue of Indianapolis Monthly. As you might suspect, the list is culled from minutes and memories, so if yours are different, you can comment on the article online. Here are his choices, presented in chronological order "because we can’t really rank them. Well, except for maybe that one.." Read the 10 Greatest Indiana Shows after the jump. Read More
07/30/2015 - The concert began with a simple introduction. The lights went down and a male voice came over a P.A., saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, from Seymour, Indiana, Mr. John Mellencamp." The curtain lifted, revealing five men in black suits and a gowned fiddle player, and the band launched into the opening notes of "Lawless Times." Soon after, Mellencamp entered the stage, causing the packed crowd of thousands to stand up and cheer. Read David Accomazzo of the Phoenix News Times complete show review after the jump. Read More

Read Kelli Skye Fadroski's complete show review from the Microsoft Theater after the jump. Here are some excerpts: "Though his vocal is certainly standout and easily identified, he has always sounded a bit like the late Joe Cocker, mixed with some Bob Dylan and a dash of Leonard Cohen..."

"When he belts out, “I am a troubled man,” it’s believable. The same goes for “The Isolation of Mister” when the music lowers and he honestly delivers, “Thought I was livin’ a life of freedom, but I was living in a cage...” Read More

"Then it’s off to Australia for more than a dozen shows"

Candid talk is a defining Mellencamp trait, and “Plain Spoken” is the name of the album he released last September. An 80-date tour to promote the album wraps up on Aug. 4 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Seymour, Ind., native is performing a wealth of folk and country-blues tunes in a show the 63-year-old characterizes as being “age appropriate.Read the complete article after the jump. Read More

06/19/2015 - With a voice now more gravel than sweet and a frame suggesting he has experienced every one of his 63 years, John Mellencamp and a six-member band brought the tour behind his 2014 work Plain Spoken to the Merriam Theater this past Tuesday. Bluesy, inventive and energetic, it was one of my favorite concerts so far this year. Read the Chris Sikich's complete blog review after the jump. Read More

06/14/2015 - Seeing John Mellencamp live illustrates why his latest album hit the Billboard top 20 and what likely prompted Republic Records to offer him a lifetime contract.

His songs continue to age remarkably well and sound of-the-moment, whether new or old. Read Hays Davis' complete show review after the jump. Read More
06/11/2015 - Putting John Mellencamp in an opera house seems like the proverbial bull in the china shop scenario.

The dude refers to himself as the Little Bastard, after all. And the hard-hitting heartland rock on which he's staked his reputation is more punky than Puccini, more R.O.C.K. (in the U.S.A.) than "Rigoletto." Somewhere Giuseppe Verdie may be rolling in his grave.

But Mellencamp's early two-hour show on Wednesday night, June 10, proved well-suited for the Detroit Opera House. Read the complete Detroit Opera House review after the jump. Read More
06/10/2015 - At the conclusion of his set Tuesday night at DeVos Performance Hall, John Mellencamp waxed amusingly and philosophically about nostalgia. He went on about how older folk – a camp he admits he pitches his tent in now – tend to go on and on about "old times," then followed it with a nostalgia number about nostalgia, "Cherry Bomb," a bit of delicious Midwestern corn that created many memories for people who blared their car radios in the 1980s. 05/31/2015 - Mellencamp opened the down-home, two-hour concert with “Lawless Times” and “Troubled Man,” two songs from his latest album, the very fine “Plain Spoken.”

“Thank you very much. I’m John Mellencamp,” he said, as if his self-identification was necessary.

He promised fans songs they know, songs they don’t know, songs they could sing along to and songs they could dance to, as he demonstrated that with a little jig all his own. Read Kevin Johnson's of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch complete show review after the jump. Read More
