Here are some excerpts: " “I know me,” he clarified. “I’m old enough to know that I don’t need instruction or any of that kind of stuff. I know what I want to do and I do it...” "“They’re the same as my songs,” Mr. Mellencamp said of his art, which gives off a dark aura, at least at first glance. “American folk songs were about tragedy, right? They were about suffering and tragedy, and a lot of my songs are about that, even though they were misunderstood...” Read More
10/16/2015 - ...That Mellencamp puts brush to canvas may come as a surprise for many, but given the artist’s
proclivity to imbue his music with intimate stories and potent imagery (think
“Pink Houses,” one of the most famous examples), perhaps it shouldn’t. Often
figurative, and evoking hints of Neo- and German Expressionism, Mellencamp’s
paintings tread new ground, while remaining thematically in line with the
small–town, earnest portraits he crafts in verse. Read Issac Kaplan's of Artsy Magazine exclusive interview with John about his forthcoming exhibition at the ACA Galleries in New York, titled “The Isolation of Mister,” opening to the public on October 22, 2015, his beginnings in art and music, and the milestones that led him to stardom after the jump. 10/01/2015 - We are pleased to announce the first one man show at the prestigious ACA Galleries in New York City, John Mellencamp: The Isolation of Mister exhibition runs from October 22nd through to December 19, 2015. The list of giants of American art whose careers were established or advanced by ACA Galleries would cover several pages. They are artists who have had something to say; a social conscience to express; a radical concept of art to advocate. Mellencamp found his visual voice in Expressionism. The German Expressionism of the early twentieth century, with its anguish over human brutality and corruption, spoke to Mellencamp’s deep feelings about social justice. Mellencamp’s imagery thus takes its inspiration from the same sources as his music: the struggles of the working man and woman, oppressive authority and social struggle. Read more about the 80 years of Advocacy for American Art on the ACA Gallery Website and read the complete press release after the jump. Please note: There is no entry fee for the exhibition
09/25/2015 - Read Tom Duffy's complete 10 takeaways from Farm Aid 30, which drew an estimated 26,000 fans to the FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Chicago’s Northerly Island article after the jump. Number 8. Mellencamp offered the most hit-laden set of the day with direct relevance to Farm Aid’s cause. Top 10 Hot 100 tracks like “Small Town” and “Rain on the Scarecrow” sounded as great as in 1985, the year Farm Aid began. As with all the artists, but particularly striking for Mellencamp, stark, beautiful and massive photos of America’s farms were projected behind his band -- the work of photographers Patty O'Brien, Audra Mulkern, Sandi Whitmore, Rod Gerst and David Sowa and the lighting/projection team led by Jason Robinson. 09/21/2015 - Number One: Best Blue Collar Spirit: John Mellencamp:
John Mellencamp has always seemed to relate to the average Joe American.
Maybe it's his small-town roots or down-home upbringing, but the Indiana rocker
is a blue-collar worker at heart. To that end, he has and continues to perfectly
embody the Farm Aid spirit. "Can't trust the police/With their guns or their
nights/My, my these are lawless times," he intoned with a cigarette-stained
growl on his set-opening "Lawless Times." Hits like "Small Town" and "Pink
Houses," both unleashed at Farm Aid, may have a more upbeat sentiment, but
Mellencamp is no naïve fool. As the man dressed in black professed on the Farm
Aid-appropriate "Rain on the Scarecrow:" "This land fed a nation this land made
me proud/And son I'm just sorry there's no legacy for you now." Read the complete "15 Best Things We Saw At Farm Aid 2015" after the jump. Read More
