Stephen King and John Mellencamp were in Orono Tuesday promoting their musical, “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.”

It’s a tale of love, jealousy, and lust.

Two brothers battle over a girl.

All three die.

Years later, the boys’ younger brother is watching the same scenario play out with his boys.

Caitlin Burchill sat down with King and Mellencamp Tuesday.

==========

“So Ghost Brothers of Darkland County has been a long time coming. You guys have been working on this project for more than 10 years together. Stephen, what’s it like to begin the 2014 leg of this your right near your hometown in Bangor, Maine?”

“It’s wonderful because you know, I’ve lived here going on 40 years now. It’s my hometown. It’s kind of like, come on out and see what I did because it’s almost like when you are in the first grade and your parents come to your show or something like that so, I hope everyone comes and everybody really likes it because I’m real proud of the show and it’s got words but it’s also got fantastic music that John wrote so, I’m excited. Let’s put it that way”

“John do you get to enjoy Maine at all or is it all work no play while you’re here?”

“No, Steve is a lovely host. You know. He’s taken me around town. Showed me some of the sights. We got to visit the library whiz was really thrilling for me. (Laughter).”

“And we had a nice meal last night.”

“So you two are an unlikely pair. What was it like collaborating together on this project?”

“Actually we were a very likely pair because we both grew up in small towns. We both are kind of outsiders outside of our business.”

“So no fights?”

“For Steve and I? I think I raised my voice kind of to Steve once in 15 years and he’s never raised his voice to me.”

“Well…”

“Not to my face.” (Laughter)

“You’re not following each other on twitter.”

“I don’t twitter. If I ever tweet, you’re the first topic.”

“Okay, but you don’t tweet.”

“I know but…”

“So it could all be bull.”

“It’s always bull. Steve, were writers. We make stuff up.”
