Easy Target

Here's an easy target
With just one quiet pop
Shot to hell anyway
No reason to stop
In the streets and the gutters
The cotton fields in this land
Here's an easy target
With a trigger, in your hand

So, Black lives matter
Who we trying to kid
Here's an easy target
Don't matter, never did
Crosses burning
Such a long time ago
400 years and we still don't, let it go

well let the poor be damned
And the easy targets too
All are created equal
Equally beneath me and you
Children crying
Under the time-keeping sun
The war on the easy targets
We won't ever, get this done

Easy targets
All along the avenue
Living here in Sucker Town,
Baby me and you
Behind the bars
To keep each other apart
Easy targets
Our Country's broken heart
Our Country's broken heart

12.30.2016 - Lehigh Valley's The Morning Call ranked the top 50 concerts of 2016. John's show at the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA on October 14th during his Plain Spoken Tour came in at number 3.

3. It’s fair to conjecture that, 34 years ago when John Mellencamp wrote the song “Jack & Diane” with its lyrics “Oh yeah, life goes on/Long after the thrill of living is gone,” he wasn’t envisioning a time when he would be twice the age he was then and still performing it. At F.M. Kirby Center, Mellencamp, now 65, played a 19-song, 95-minute show that included many of his early hits, but often presented them from an older, more wizened perspective – but made them no less successful. And with them, he offered newer songs that resonated perhaps differently, but just as strongly with a sold out audience that, like Mellencamp, also has grown older. 11.17.2016 - John Mellencamp may be known as the Heartland’s storyteller, but there’s much more to the Grammy Award winner than meets the eye.

To fully explore the juxtaposition of the “American Fool” and iconoclast for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s new exhibit “Mellencamp,” appearing in the Ahmet Ertegun Main Exhibition Hall, organizers present a renaissance man who belies his “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” artist image. Read More

11.10.2016 - John Mellencamp's exhibition opening today is not part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's "Louder Than Words: Rock, Power & Politics.''

But perhaps not in the 20-year history of the museum has there been a more appropriate display to open within two days of Donald Trump's historic – and for some, shattering – victory in the presidential race. More than 2,000 square feet of space featuring in excess of 100 items pay homage to the man who chose to pave his own road. Mellencamp strutted onstage to his hit “Lawless Times,” with his signature confidence and his charismatic six-man band. “Some songs you know, some songs you don’t know, some you can dance to, and some you can sing along to.”

And that, he did. During his entire performance, Mellencamp kept the audience either dancing with each other on their feet or belting their hearts out along to his infectious lyrics. Read the complete show review after the jump. Read More

“I wrote this song when I was a child,” he said. “This is like singing ‘Jingle Bells’ to me. The only reason I play this song is I know you guys want to hear it. And I know what I was doing the night I wrote this. It’s lucky it got written at all.”

Then he launched into “Jack and Diane,” his first hit, and brilliantly turned it into a sing-along that felt like it was written to be sung by a crowd. Read Matt Ryerson's complete show review after the jump. Read More
